you cold use a memory stick, backup files into it and then transfer them to your new computer. Please drop Vista, go with XP. It will make thing much smoother for you. Good luck!

Use a cd.
copy the files onto a writeable cd. for two reasons

(1) you will always have a copy of them

(2) it is easier to copy files and folders to and from cd's
I think you can use a lan lead
USB link cables are crap. Either get a USB hard-disk, or move the files via your network. If you do not have a network, buy an ethernet cross-over cable, and link your machines that way.

EDIT: in your position, I would simply mount my old drive in the new box as a slave, then copy the files directly.
You should dump windows and install kubuntu instead. Or at the very least, upgrade your vista system to xp (yes, I know vista came out after xp, but xp just about works, while vista is a crock of ****)
You should use a laplink cable.
It would be the quickest way I expect. I just put all my files onto a cd and after I installed Vista I copied the files from the cd back to the computer.
I have an mp3 player which I use as a pen drive. If you have one you can use simply load your pics onto it then plug the player into a USB port on your Vista computer and load them into your pics folder.
Not a USB cable but you can buy a serial transfer cable and connect both PC s that way use the in built file transfer program in Windows
Belkin now do a Vista transfer cable especially to transfer files from an XP machine to a Vista machine. Costs about 拢20 and is available at PC World. I have one myself and it works in conjuction with the file transfer wizard and special drivers supplied on a cd that is supplied with the cable.
Use crossable or USB flush drive
